The President of DKU, Dr. Wolrad Rommel, and the President of Yessenov University, Mr. Berik Akhmetov, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation within the framework of the joint implementation of the international project “German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering” in Western Kazakhstan.

The new educational institution should become the basis for training qualified personnel for the development of the hydrogen industry in the Mangystau region.
The main business partner of the project is the German-Swedish group of companies “SVEVIND”, which plans to build a plant for the production of “green” hydrogen in the Mangistau region (The project is being implemented by Hyrasia Energy, a subsidiary of Svevind Energy GmbH).

February 2023

The presidents of both universities held an official meeting at Yessenov University on the topic of creating a new institute. During the meeting, the parties confirmed their confidence in the imminent opening of the institute with the support of partners from Germany.

March 2023

An Agreement was signed between the German-Kazakh University and the Svevind Energy GmbH company on partial financing of the training program in the amount of 30 thousand euros.

March-April 2023

A delegation consisting of the President of the German-Kazakh University Dr. Wolrad Rommel and the President of Yessenov University B. Akhmetov was on a working visit to Germany on issues of cooperation between the newly created institute and German universities. Agreements and memorandums with a number of leading German technical universities have been signed.

A cooperation agreement with German universities makes it possible to introduce German educational standards at the new institute, and also provides ample opportunities for the exchange of experience, inviting German professors to Aktau and introducing a double degree program.

Negotiations were also held between the presidents of the German-Kazakh University and Yessenov University with representatives of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues of support for the work of the new institute.

June 2023

During the state visit of German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Astana, a number of documents were signed regarding the strengthening of Kazakh-German political, economic and humanitarian cooperation.

As part of the official event, DKU President Professor Wolrad Rommel and Yessenov University President Berik Akhmetov signed in Akorda an Agreement on the establishment of the German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering.

June 21, 2023

The official opening of the German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering took place in Aktau. The ceremony was attended by Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov.

During the opening ceremony of the institute, the presidents of both universities, the Federal President of Germany and the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, laid a time capsule at the site of the construction of the new institute building.

September 1, 2023

The German-Kazakh Institute for Sustainable Engineering (KINI) opened its doors to its first students.

Several dozen young people began their studies at the institute in the educational programs: “Logistics” and “Energy and Environmental Engineering”. The programs are aimed at studying specialists for the production of green hydrogen in Mangystau and supporting the development of logistics for the middle transport corridor from China to Europe across the Caspian Sea.

By 2028

By 2028, it is planned to expand the list of educational programs: up to 8 bachelor’s programs and up to 6 master’s programs.
